Almost Scottish Fiction EP Volume 3

It's the not-quite-the-first Monday of June, however a week late is better than never!  Myself and David are absolutely thrilled to unveil Volume 3 of the Almost Scottish Fiction EP  series.  Again there's six tracks to wrap your lugs around, and my oh my what a collection they are!  I know I have to say that, but really I'm smiling ear to ear about how good this little EP is.

Machines In Heaven - Taxpayers Compass

Machines In Heaven have provided us this exclusive track for this release.  Combining the power of the Aphex Twin and Radiohead circa Kid A, this is a masterclass in electronic pop music which still retains the band's experimental edge.

Mt. Doubt - Leap

Taken from Mt. Doubt's stunning debut album My Past Is A Quiet Beast,  this track is a driving number with shimmering guitars creating a War On Drugs style feel. Leo Bargary's vocals complete the package with a baritone quality reminiscent of Matt Berninger.

Shards - Just To Get Something Started

Shards debut release Just To Get Something Started  perfectly shows off the band's brand of melancholic eletronica which the band have christened melancholitronica.  It's part ambient, part experimental and really rather fantastic.

WASHED - One To Five

WASHED is the new electronic project by David previously of Fiction Faction.  This track One To Five  offers a tasty insight into what has been going on in the studio, with reverb vocals draped over rising and see-sawing synths.

in:tides - Yours Is The Earth

Yours Is The Earth  is the closing and title track from Glasgow post-rockers in:tides' latest EP.   If you like your music layered, building and with arena filling atmosphere, then this will be right up your street.  The band are playing at Xpo-North this week so don't forget to check them out!

Analog Angel - Your Breath

Your Breath  is Analog Angel's most recent single, released ahead of their rather exciting support slot with former Kraftwerk man Wolfgang Flur in Norwich on 20th June.   The track is a much poppier affair than the band's previous releases, though no less powerful.

EP Review - in:tides - Yours Is The Earth

Yours Is The Earth is the atmospheric debut EP of post-rock band in:tides.  This four members collective, originally from Glasgow, are full of promises and their tunes offer breathing space, a pure moment of mind-blowing instrumental music.

The EP is composed of four epic songs and starts with A Moment of Clarity, a harmonious track, both beguiling and calm.  The soft pace, clean drums and guitars, embellish the song and make it an authentic track, a peaceful melody and a transparent story.

Porcelain Waves is a stroke of genius, a truly inspiring post-rock track which carefully and genuinely matures.  It is longer, louder, even heavier, yet, because the guitar and the drums are in symbiosis, the song is a fulfilling experience.

Yellow Leaves From Maple Trees is full of colour and imagery, thus, it makes it possible to picture the leaves gently falling off the trees.  Thanks to this melody, the band captured the perfect moment when time stops - and it truly works like magic.

Title track Yours Is The Earth is a blazing experience, a fascinating taste of rock experimental.  It is hard to believe that it is already the last song of this astonishing EP but it is a flawless finish with both the right notes and the perfect rhythm.

We're Only Here For The Banter - in:tides

Continuing the strong trend of post rock instrumental coming out of Glasgow, in:tides have caught my attention with their cracking track Porcelain Waves.  The band are out and about gigging over the next couple of months, so I caught up with Ross from the band to chat.


Hello! How the devil are you?

Hey, I'm great thanks!  Our debut track Porcelain Waves  was one of Vic Galloway's BBC Introducing features on his show- so still on a high from that, plus was recently at Arctangent festival and saw some amazing bands over the weekend.

It's the question everyone hates, but could illuminate our readers with a little bit about your music and your influences?

We are a post-rock quartet from Glasgow, Scotland.  We take writing influence from instrumental artists such as: Explosions in the Sky and This Will Destroy You.

What's your song-writing / creative process like?

We are pretty critical on the writing side-of-things, what normally happens is myself and Neil get together or e-mail ideas, which normally starts in having loads of guitar parts.  From then on the selection process and practicing determines what parts make it or don't, then there is a bit more structure work and it becomes more-shaped into the context of a song all made to sound really nice with our guitar pedals!  Haha.  Something we thought of trying for fun was to come up with a song title and then write the song around it but that could be one for the future!

What could we expect to see from a live show?

We are playing with our friends in A Sudden Burst Of Colour at bloc on September 9th with a Danish headliner!  It's a free show and we're really looking forward to that.  The set has a bit of everything: melody, harmonies, atmosphere, heavy parts, and also reflective, uplifting parts!

What else have you got planned for the rest of 2014?

We are playing some shows with friends and some great Scottish bands such as:  A Sudden Burst of Colour, Mountains Under Oceans, The Gothenburg Address, Bellow Below and Halo Tora.  You can find out where we are playing at www.facebook.com/intides

We go into the studio around September and hope to have the EP mastered and out in October!  We have four songs which I would say are pretty strong.
