Scottish Fiction Radio Show - 30th July 2015

There's something pretty special about live music on radio.  It's the aspect of doing this whole Scottish Fiction hoo-la that I enjoy the most.  So it was such a delight to get back to hosting Scottish Fiction Sessions as I welcomed Dec '91 into the studio for a chat and live music.  We spoke about music, travelling, our upcoming Scottish Fiction Presents gig, as well as all sorts of other nonsense.

Making up the rest of the show, there's a new Playlist addition from Tongues, music from Yutani, Turtle, and Holy Esque, and stunning Re-Mixing It Up track from Outblinker via Machines In Heaven.

Scottish Fiction Radio Show - 2nd July 2015

Having had the idea of doing a live review show for the best part of six months, it was great to finally get the Scottish Fiction Roundtable off the ground and on the air.  Not that it was overly difficult mind you.  Step 1: Ask a blogger to come on the show and review records.  Step 2: Do it.

So I was delighted to be joined by my monthly EP series partner in crime David McElroy from Almost Predictable. Almost to run through tracks from Deadly Rides, Reverieme, Ambassadeurs, Holy Esque, Hudson Mohawke and Pinact.  There's also a BBC Introducing Stage slant to the show, with no less than 7 acts playing the T in the Park stage featured on the show.  Wrap that up with a Re-Mixing It Up track and new music from Miracle Strip, Outblinker and Big Cloud, you've got yourself two hours of Scottish Fiction.

Miracle Strip - Took A Running Jump
Tongues. - Anymore
Miaoux Miaoux - Luxury Discovery
Deadly Rides - The Ride
Reverieme - Plankton
Ambassadeurs feat. C Duncan - Looking At You
AROUND THE WORLD - The War On Drugs - Lost In The Dream
Analog Angel - Your Breath
Holy Esque - Fade
Hudson Mohawke - Shadows
PLAYLIST - Pinact - Everybody Says
PLAYLIST - Catholic Action - The Real World
PLAYLIST - Machines In Heaven - Displacer
PLAYLIST - Kathryn Joseph - the worm
Shona Brown - Finally Woken
Man of Moon - The Road
Monogram - Anno
Outblinker - Pink
Stillhound - Think This Way
RE-MIXING IT UP - Babe - The Warbling (Bill Wells Remix)
Big Cloud - Come In
Bdy_Prts - Cold Shoulder

Single Review - Holy Esque - Sovereign

Holy Esque join the ever-expanding alumini of Glasgow Art School alternative post-rockers and present Sovereign,  their most recent single.  Recorded in the leafy Bispebjerg suburb of Copenhagen, the Glaswegian four-piece kick off with synthetic intent and quickly descend into a foreboding guitar melody full of hooks and turns.  The dark introduction sets the tone for the opening verse, sung by the gravel-voiced Hynes.  Essentially an ersatz spoken word performance, he complements the accompanying synth cuts, four-four rhythm and staccato bass line.  The subsequent chorus is executed with discerning conviction. Sovereign’s zenith is the explosive vocal performance played out in its latter half.  The intense shrieks and shrills of Hynes are matched in severity by the stabbing guitars and heavy drums.  The distorted outro brings to an end the edgy performance.

By coalescing music, art and pseudo-religious statements Holy Esque are being feted by assuming millennials looking for the latest crossover sound.  In spite of this, the Glaswegian four-piece are somewhat inexact.  The quasi-religious connotation of their name and shadow-casting cross logo has been keeping indie music bloggers searching for “the greater message”.  Hynes’ sometimes inaccessible vibrato is perceived as a charming imperfection.  There is an all-embracing sense of alarm with Sovereign  and an impatience that will help the quartet in their defence against the abrasive and fleeting nature of the modern day indie subculture.  Holy Esque are in fact quite profane and hidden beneath all the style and pomp is real substance.

Holy Esque - Sovereign  is out via Beyond The Frequency Records and is available to download for free here.

Scottish Fiction Podcast - 8th August 2012

On this week's show we were joined in the studio by live guests 7of7.  As there were 6 of them, it got a bit crowded, but fun nonetheless!  The band played two live tracks, one of which was a special cover, and chose some tracks to play during the first hour of the show.  In between all that there was some chat about their music and more!  Sadly due to a recording mishap, the first 10 minutes of the show are missing.  Sorry 'bout that!  There's also bag loads of new Scottish music from the likes of Evil Hand, Father Sculptor and Be Like Pablo.  More good music than you can wildly shake a stick at!

7of7 - These Day Are Our Last (Live Acoustic)

City Of Colour - O' Sister - Chosen by 7of7
