Scottish Fiction's Words With Friends Cup - Update

Drumroll please!  We have our Scottish Fiction Word With Friends finalists.  Here's how things have been going.

Carlo Acosta vs. Brian Pokora

It was a close one, toing and froing with the lead.  But it was Brian from Trapped Mice / Loch Awe who pipped Carlo from The King Hats by 15 points.  Carlo's patented style of 'playing-with-letters-until-something-works' simply wasn't enough to stop Brian in his tracks.  Congratulations to Brian, and hard luck to Carlo.  Here's what our contestants had to say:

Scottish Fiction - Hard luck to Carlo from The King Hats.  Every great match always needs a loser!
Carlo - It's been a great competition.  I can't wait to see who wins.  This was such a good idea. I'm wining it next year!
Scottish Fiction - The final proved one step too far.  Do you think you could have done anything different?   Who is your tip for the WWF Cup Final?
Carlo - It's tough to take.  Complacency was my enemy after building such a big lead. Brain is my tip, he pulled out some crackers.

Brian - That was so close, extremely well played!
Scottish Fiction - You're through to the WWF Cup Final.  Is this what you've been aiming for since round 1?  How do you plan to prepare for the big game?
Brian - I think I'll stop playing my other games, save all the words for this one.  Also, I'll play as many dirty words as possible.

Boab Canavan vs. Stu Lewis

In our second Words With Friends semi final Boab from Campfires In Winter took on Stu Lewis of The Tidal Wave Of Indifference blog.  Things were close pretty much up until the final moments.  Boab pulled it out the bag though with an outstanding final play of 'pimento' onto a triple word score, meaning even Stu's 101 pointer couldn't stop Boab running out as the winner.

Boab - That was a nail biter.  Couldn't believe my luck I when I saw the letters appear before me.
Scottish Fiction - Your through to the WWF Cup Final.  Is this what u've been aiming for since round 1?  How do you plan to prepare for the big game?
Boab - I was hopeful but wasn't really expecting to get this far.  In preparation, I'll be eating a dictionary every day

Stu - Well played that Boab, I CANNOT BELIEVE that last word you played!!!
Scottish Fiction - The final proved one step too far.  Do you think you could have done anything different?  Who is your tip for the WWF Cup Final?
Stu - I'm backing Boab.  I've played (and beaten) Brian but Boab feels unstoppable.  I don't think I could have done anything more.  Even after my 101pt word, 'pimento' was sensational!

So that's it folks.  We've been whittled our competitors down from eight to the final two.  Our finalists.  Things will kick off this Friday and Brian will battle Boab for the inaugural Scottish Fiction Words With Friends Cup.

Scottish Fiction's Words With Friends Cup

As The Bee Gees once said, 'it's only words'.  But when you have Words With Friends, then it becomes a competition.  And that's when things get interesting!

Scottish Fiction proudly presents the first Words With Friends Cup.  Over the month of March, eight Scottish musicians and bloggers will be pitting their wits and way with words against each other in a knock out competition to be crowned the WWF Champion!  (Let's hope no giant panda's tries to sue us over the name!)

The format is simple.  Our 8 contestants have been drawn against each other in round 1.  The winners will progress to the semi-finals, and we will whittle those four down to two, and then our winner will emerge.  Each game lasts one week, if there's no outright winner, who ever leads at the end of the week will win.

Here's our contestants:

Shambles Miller
Carlo Acosta from The King Hats
Steve McGillivray writer for Muso's Guide & Glasgow Podcart
Brian Pokora from Trapped Mice / Loch Awe
Dave Wark from Plastic Animals
Robert Canavan from Campfires In Winter
Stu Lewis blogger behind The Tidal Wave Of Indifference
Stewart Allan from Black International

And here is how the draw has panned out:

Round 1                                   Semi Finals                                   Final

Game A
                                                Game E
Shambles Miller

Carlo Acosta

Game B                                    vs                                                Winner of Game E

Steve McGillivray
vs                                             Winner of Game B
Brian Pokora

Game C                                                                                       vs                                    Champion!
                                                Game F
Dave Wark
vs                                             Winner of Game C
Robert Canavan

Game D                                    vs                                                 Winner of Game F

Stu Lewis
vs                                             Winner of Game D
Stewart Allan

I'll be keeping you bang up to date with some cutting and insightful commentary, and providing you with a nice profile of each of our contestants.  You can keep up to date with the whole affair on the blog, on our Facebook page and via Twitter with hashtag #WWFCup.  And I'm sure those who are winning will be none to shy about broadcasting it!

Scottish Fiction October EP

Wah hey! It's time for another Scottish Fiction FREE EP! Been excited about this one since about two days into October, so I'm happy to finally release it upon the vaults of the internet.

As well as being a collection of terrific songs which together create a whirlwind of awesomeness, this month's EP also showcases some of the best Edinburgh has to offer, as each of our four participants are from Auld Reekie. Delightful stuff if you ask me! Click on the artists names below to be transported through IP addresses and web servers to that particular artists 'We're Only Here For The Banter' feature.

First up are Edinburgh five piece Trapped Mice, contributing a track off their last EP called 'Pointing And Shouting'.

Next are Plastic Animals who have been around for over five years now, and have released a swarm of recent stuff. 'Green Light' features on our EP.

Following them is Donna Maciocia who will have some brand spanking new material out soon. She has contributed a demo of the wonderful 'Fists At The Sky'.

And lastly are Supermarionation closing things off with the track 'The Paris Express'.

Enjoy! You can download the full EP for free here (also check out previous month's EP's available for free too), and also stream below.

We're Only Here For The Banter - Trapped Mice

It seems like recently all the bands I've interviewed for the blog have been from our fair countries capital. So rather than buck the trend, I've decided to continue it! Edinburgh 5 piece Trapped Mice
released an EP 'Waving And Pointing' earlier this year. Rocking a melodic folky beat throughout, it's a lovely little number. Ian from the band took some time to answer a few questions. Have a gander below.

Hello, how are you?

Fine thanks. Been better, been worse. Beat up, run down, high on life, buzzing my tits off. How are you?

Aye no bad thanks! Tell us a little bit about your music and influences.

It's a bit of a mixture really. Loud songs with lots of noise and guitars and shouting, and quieter acoustic tinkly ones, but mainly somewhere in between. We all come from fairly different backgrounds musically so I guess there'll be a few influences lurking about down there. The last few months I've been listening to lots of Red House Painters, Low, Grandaddy, and I think that might have had some impact on a couple of our more recent songs, with longer instrumental passages and slow builds etc.

Scotland has a thriving music scene. How do you find being a part of that?

Fab.

Which Scottish artists would you recommend to the Scottish Fiction readers?

Plastic Animals! The Scottish Enlightenment! They're two of my personal faves, just off the top of my head. Also I'm a huge fan of Wounded Knee and Withered Hand, and I know there's a lot of love for those two guys in the rest of the band.

What is your songwriting process like?

Normally I'll have a song pretty much finished before I take it to the others for them to work their magic, sometimes with just a vague structure and sometimes a bit more padded out with different parts and everything. It was only fairly recently I conceded that it was perhaps not enough to write a song and unleash it on the public for everyone to appreciate its innate worth, and that it was probably best to try and make it sound good first.

You had an EP 'Waving And Pointing' out earlier this year that got some rather nice reviews. How did that feel?

Did it?? That's nice. I'm not sure they listened to it properly. What about the shit sandwich review? (Or was that our first EP?) Available in all good retailers! (called Avalanche)

What could we expect to see/hear from your live shows?

See: flailing limbs, dropped picks, wincing band members

Hear: kicked-out leads, forgotten words, shredding, slap bass, Latino spirit, snore-core, tribal rhythms

What does the rest of 2011 hold for you?

Recording! We're busy recording our first proper full-length album, which is exciting. We're doing it all ourselves on my laptop , which should be interesting given our lack of technical knowhow or indeed talent. Luckily we plan on finding someone who knows what they're doing to sort out the mess afterwards; Alex at Swanfield studios has done an amazing job mastering the first couple of tracks so I'm sure we'll end up with something at least half listenable.

What's been your biggest achievement so far?

Achieving the unachievable. Obtaining the unobtainable. Bridging the gulf, filling the void, slaying the dragon and saving the princess. Eating the killer curry. Smelling what's selling.

Thanks for speaking with us, would you care to share a joke with us?

Knock knock.
Who's there?
Trapped.
Trapped who?
Trapped Mice.
Oh.

Check out Trapped Mice's Facebook page, Soundcloud page, Bandcamp page, and follow those lovely guys and gals on Twitter too. Have a wee listen to 'Beauty And The Beast' below as well. Go on, go on, go on.
