Scottish Fiction Podcast - 11th January 2015

2014 had so much incredible music that we can't quite cut the apron strings just yet, which is why on this first new Scottish Fiction show of 2015, we've plumped for playing a whole heap of our favourite tracks from last year.  A little late perhaps, but don't think of this as a definitive list (as I could easily fill another two hour show with great songs from last year) but as a selection of some of the music that floated our audible boat in 2014.  Tunes from Campfires In Winter, Prehistoric Friends, Monogram, Tuff Love, ULTRAS, Hector Bizerk and much much more are all nestled in this episode.

Vasa - Not A Cop
Conquering Animal Sound - The Next Day
Monogram - Romance
Foreignfox - Yoghurt
Skinny Dipper - Hospital Bed
Boygirlanimalcolour - JUPITER FIST
United Fruit - Open Your Eyes
The Phantom Band - The Wind That Cried The World
Book Group - Here Is Too Near
Campfires In Winter - We'll Exist

Scottish Fiction Presents: Book Group, Behold The Old Bear, and Shambles Miller

It's been a while since the last Scottish Fiction Presents gig, but boy what a way to make a comeback!  I'm delighted to officially announce that on Thursday, 20th November at The Cellar on Queen Street, Glasgow the next Scottish Fiction Presents gig will take place.

And topping our bill are the glorious Book Group, one of the finest Edinburgh bands plying their trade at the moment, with fuzzy guitars, a fulsome rhythm section all squeezed in with some infectious pop hooks.  Live, the band always provide an emphatic performance, bombing anthems out across the crowd.  Keep an eye out for megaphones and wandering frontmen!

Support comes from quirky alt-pop Behold, The Old Bear, fresh from their split cassette release via Scottish Fiction for Cassette Store Day, and everyone's favourite singer-songwriter; Shambles Miller.

Tickets are on sale NOW for those of you with an eye for a bargain as if you buy in advance online you'll get a ticket for the knock down price of £5 right here.  Otherwise, tickets are £6 on the door.

And for those with their social lives integrated to Facebook, go on and invite yourself.

See you there!

FIRST WATCH: Book Group - Here Is Too Near

Back in May this year, Edinburgh's Book Group cemented their claim as one of Scotland's finest up and coming bands with the release of their second EP Tantrums.
Always ones to take things at their own pace, the band mix fuzzy guitars with a fulsome rhythm section, squeezed in with some infectious pop hooks.  The opening track from Tantrums  is a perfect example of that, and now it has another chance to shine with it's very own video.

Here Is Too Near  sees the band on top form, with lead singer Graeme Anderson's impassioned cries of "Please, come on over" building to anthemic levels.  The video, produced by Calum Ross and Rob McCrae, is a whirlwind tour of the band close up.

To mark the video, Book Group are playing several dates across the country over the coming weeks.  You can catch them playing:

24th October 2014 - Edinburgh, The Mash House (as part of Edinburgh Oxjam Takeover 2014)

20th November 2014 - Glasgow, The Cellar - Scottish Fiction Presents with Behold, The Old Bear and Shambles Miller

21st November 2014 - Dundee, venue TBC

Scottish Fiction Podcast - 5th August 2014 - Vinyl Mix

Crackle, crackle.

An all vinyl show?  Is this the '70's?  Am I mad?  No, and quite possibly, but that's neither here nor there.  For a change I decided to do a special show this week featuring tracks from Scottish artists played entirely on vinyl.  And an inspired decision it was too, as it has resulted in this little beaut of a podcast you are now listening to.  Let's call it the b-side to our usual offering.  And like all good b-sides there's some rarities and surprises in store, from artists such as Meursault, Franz Ferdinand, The Twilight Sad, Belle and Sebastian and more.

The State Broadcasters - Let's Make T-shirts
Honeyblood - Bud
The Pictish Trail - The Handstand Crowd
Franz Ferdinand - Get Up And Use Me

Scottish Fiction's Top 25 Singles / EP's of 2013

Happy New Year to y'all.  2013 was another feather in the cap of fantastic music emanating from Scottish shores.  The rise of CHVRCHES shows we do electro-pop with the best of them.  The return of Boards of Canada demonstrates we've not lost that shoe-gazey EDM touch either.  In between there's been hoards of fantastic folk, positive pop, humongous hip-hop and incredible indie to treat ears of all frequencies.

On Christmas day we aired a special episode of Scottish Fiction which was a look back on some of our favourite singles and EP's for 2013.  You can listen to that in full here or via the embed at the bottom of the page.  Here's the majority of those tracks, plus a few more, making this post my favourite 25 singles or EP's from 2013.

In no particular order, and with no other judging criteria than my own personal tastes here's Scottish Fiction's Top 25 Singles / EP's of 2013

Prides - Out Of The Blue

Name changes have never sounded so good.  Previously Midnight Lion, now Prides, the Glasgow three piece re-invented themselves to fist pumping effect.  Dancing like a maniac to this tune at Wickerman was a highlight of 2013.

Campfires In Winter - Picture of Health EP

Following single White Lights released early in 2013, September's release of Picture of Health EP cements Campfires In Winter's status as one of the finest emerging bands in Scotland.  Album next surely?

Book Group - Victory Lap / A Lowdown of a LOUD Sound

DĂ©but single from Book Group released via the influential Gerry Loves Records.  Insprining, uplifting and gloriously inflectious.  Book Group, don't you ever change.

Young Fathers - I Heard

Edinburgh hip-hop trio Young Fathers hooked many people with this smooth, emotional and soulful cut from their second EP Tape Two.  Released on the legendary Anticon label, lead single I Heard has the power to worm inside your brain for weeks.

Atom Tree - Tide of Thorns EP

There is a wave of artists who are continuing to push electronica music in new and exciting directions.  Glasgow producer and musician Atom Tree is but one of them.  Debut EP Tide of Thorns leads the pack and this track Die For Your Love evokes fluorescent memories of euphoria on a blissful come down.

Nevada Base - Foresight

Having never been a Nevada Base fan before this track I feel almost sheepish in the realisation that they are indeed Scotland's answer to LCD Soundsystem.  Foresight is an accessible jump on point for those in search of jerky rhythms and groovy basslines.

Naked - Lie Follows Lie

Spooky, eerie and haunting.  Check, check and check.  Not the most googleable names in music, but once you've found Naked, and this July release from the Edinburgh based three piece, you won't want to let go.

Giant Fang - Aqualung

When I reviewed this track back upon it's 23rd June release I said it had a 'freedom-of-the-summer' vibe and flavoured by the influence of M83.  In the midst of winter Giant Fang's Aqualung transports you back to the warmth of a carefree summer.

Lovers Turn To Monsters - Skeletor EP

Ok so I know I said this was in no particular order, but I'm putting it out there Lovers Turn To Monsters Skeletor EP is my favourite EP of 2013.  Intelligent and brutally honest lyrics with simplistic and heart tugging guitar playing, it's on a comparable scale with the indie lo-fi artists that young Kyle Wood calls his heroes.

Fake Major - Have Plenty Of Fun

Four armed singer songwriters don't come much better than Richard and Jarv of Fake Major.  Released on Comets & Cartwheels back in May of this year, Have Plenty of Fun proves that sometimes song writing partnerships are much more important than bells and whistles.  This track Little Researcher is a gem.

Michael Cassidy - Everybody's Scared

Fans of Paisley musician Michael Cassidy will be familiar with this track.  Everybody's Scared has been given the full band treatment ahead of the release of dĂ©but album My Electric Heart, and re-released with a renewed sense of warmth and purpose.

DEATHCATS!!! - The Raddest EP

Bursting with scuzzy feel good vibes, channelling the blitzkreig ethos of The Ramones and the lo-fi touch of Fugazi, DEATHCATS might just change your life.  Failing that The Raddest EP is awesome and deserves your attention.

Honeyblood - Bud

Scotland's answer to The Breeders and Throwing Muses, Honeyblood released Bud on continual Scottish music supporters FatCat Records.  It's garage rock with a laid back veneer and one of 2013's finest singles.

Poor Things - Hurricane Poor Things

Poor Things are another band who mine '90's American alt-garage rock for influence.  And to fantastic effect too.  Hurricane Poor Things ambles with intent and purpose.  Check it out.

Pinact / Min Diesel - Split 7"

Sneaking two bands in for the price of one here, this split 7" released in September by the Cool Your Jets label showcases Pinact and Min Diesel in all their DIY alt-rock glory.

Gone Wishing - The Gone Wishing Tape

The discovery of 2013 for me was the music of Owen McLaughlin.  In it's solo guise Owen plays under the moniker of Gone Wishing and his debut EP is heartfelt, gutsy and tender in just the right amounts.

Lidh - Rockpool Hospital EP

This video harks back to the play cartoon imagery used by The B-52's, but Lidh's music draws from a much wider range of influences combining in a slightly rough around the edges folk pop.  Single Rockpool Hospital is the pick of the bunch from her EP of the same name.

Mast - Romance

Former The Darien Adventure man Liam Rutherford struck out on his own in 2013 as Mast.  He struck gold with this shimmering delightful track Romance

John Knox Sex Club / Over The Wall - Split 7"

With both bands hiding in the shadows for most of 2013, a combined return via a Gerry Loves Records split 7" was a stroke of genius on everyone's part.  Animals packs the usual John Knox Sex Club punch, and Tell Her I Love Her bursts with inventive fun pop.

Garden Of Elks - Extended Play

Shouty fun pop at it's best, Garden of Elks seal the deal with a pinky promise (so they say) and rock raucously with a Pixies induced stupor.

Mad Nurse - The Rip

Not a lot is known about Mad Nurse expect they are a four piece from Edinburgh who specialise in epic, layered post rock tinged creations.  The Rip EP is one of 2013's most unrecognised releases.

Shambles Miller - Deadpool

Shambles Miller Does It Again.  Is what the headlines would say in a world where the Glaswegian singer-songwriter replaced Beyonce as the world's biggest pop star.  Whilst we wait for that, latest single Deadpool cheekily muses on the big questions.

TeenCanteen - Honey

All girl sunshine pop never sounded so good.  Taking their lead from the girl bands of the 60's and 70's, Glasgow's TeenCanteen shone brighter than most with this dĂ©but release Honey.

Wickerman Review - Saturday

Day two of Scotland 'alternative festival', and the Scottish Fiction team are awake, if not fully compos mentis, fed and water, and ready for a full on day of great music, centred once more around the Solus Tent and the goNORTH Festival Tour Tent.

A change in the advertised stage times (or perhaps a misprint in the lanyards) meant that my early afternoon trip down to the Solus Tent to see Giant Fang, instead meant I was able to catch some of the The Recovery instead.  Brash, loud and angry metal coated rock was the order of the day, sharply dispelling any remnants of sleep that were lingering.  Lead singer Andy prowled the tent, spitting vocals with fury and passion, and giving one of the most confident and self assured displays of any front men all weekend.  Not content with the sizable crowed that had gathered, he proceeded outside the tent shepherding in punters from the blaring sun to the sweaty tent for their daily dose of hardcore.

Staying in the crushing heat of the Solus Tent, four piece instrumental post-rockers Vasa provided another masterclass in layered experimental rock music.  Giving tracks from their dĂ©but EP 'Never Have Dreams' an outing, their carefully designed sound thrusts the listener along an interstellar path, each boom of Alex Gordon's bass drum propelling us further into the unknown.  But it's a journey the crowd make with aplomb.  Vasa are a post-rock band with pop sensibilities, their musical ears able to tag onto a catchy hook and build around that.  From the already mentioned EP, 'Cynthia' is a real stand-out with it's rhythmic melodies and enthusiastic execution, guitarist Scott Coupar throwing himself around the stage and in the photo pit.

The goNORTH Festival Tour Tent allowed me the opportunity to right a wrong that has lingered for some time.  Despite actually having put the band on a gig bill back last October, I've never actually seen Book Group play live.  Their charming brand of indie-folk has already drawn comparison with the heart-on-sleeve style of Frightened Rabbit, and it's not hard to see why.  The crowd lap up each track, including a group of toddlers that probably bring the average age of the whole tent down by a good decade, and one break dancing maestro who answered the call to dance very well.  Ending with their strongest track to date, 'Year Of The Cat', lead singer Graeme Anderson climbs the front barrier while bellowing out through a megaphone the final refrain of "don't you ever change".  The only change one suspects for Book Group, will be more a higher billing and bigger audiences.

Douglas Frew makes melodic and catchy electronica music under the name Giant Fang.  For this Wickerman set in the Solus Tent, only his second live show, he has bolstered his set up to include a full backing band, provided by members of Prides and Take A Worm For A Walk Week.  Recent single 'Aqualung' was made for moments like this, the track soaring with all the airs of a festival anthem, Frew and the band bringing out the big notes at all the right times.  It's great to be able to hear a full set of Giant Fang material, and there's a couple of tracks that pique my interest including a very minimalist '80's sounding song and one that chimes familiarly with The Killer 'When You Were Young'.  'Kingdom' is another one of those magic moments, Frew majestic vocals gliding over the glittery electronic melodies, and bringing the summer sun inside this small tent.

Similar to my predicament with review Hector Bizerk for Friday's review, Fake Major are a band I've seen live a good few times over the past months.  What is also similar is how my awe never fades and my enjoyment increases each time they perform.  It should never be understated just how in sync Richard Ferguson and David 'Jarv' McGinty are.  The vocals gleefully intertwine, each man knowing exactly how to complement the other.  With a set packed with their usual crowd pleasers such as 'Little Researcher', 'Love in the Mundane' and closer 'Fiction' it's another festival under their belt, and another fantastic performance for the band.

Garden Of Elks transport the crowd back to the early '90's.  Not via a DeLoran or Tardis, but through the power of their grungy alt-rock rhythms they prove the power of the Seattle underground scene still holds sway.  Lead singer Niall yelps "fun, fun, fun, fun" in a fusion of the Pixies and The Beach Boys, whilst hunched behind the drum kit dodging the low hanging tent canvas, Kirsten lashes rhythmically with raw punk power.  'This Morning We Were Astronauts' with it's angular guitars and dark vocals proves a popular highlight.

When Vic Galloway says a band are his favourite rock band on the planet you take notice.  Fat Goth are that band.  Vic isn't the only to sit up and take notice, rawk journo types Kerrang are feeling the Fat Goth love, as are the many faces gathered.  With scrumptious basslines, growling guitar hooks, and killer drum beats, the band shred through tracks off their 'Stud' album, including 'Creepy Lounge', the intentful 'Debbie's Dirty Harry' and final song 'Surf's Down' which is greeted with an emphatic moshpit.

Glasgow five piece The Yawns are another Scottish Fiction gig alumni on show at Wickerman, proving that we share great taste.  The band are led by Sean Armstrong, who throughout the set ambles about on stage nonchalantly.  Luckily their appeal is not their stage presence or stage banter, but their sun kissed surf pop, which on a day like today is the perfect tonic.  'Summer's Wasted' kicks the set off, and that breezy alt-pop vibe continues throughout.

When I started this blog I said I wouldn't write negative reviews.  Afterall, what's the point of writing about something you didn't enjoy.  So on that note I can confirm that The Enemy and Amy McDonald played on the Summerisle Stage.

One thing to be thankful for is that the repelling power of Amy McDonald on the main stage may have pushed people into the smaller tents for a musical discovery.  On the benefiting end of that effect are Prides, Glasgow's next big electro-pop band.  The band have rocketed their way through, pretty much on the strength of set closer 'Out Of The Blue', so far their only track to hit the internet, but they are far from a one tune band.  Neither are they comprised of one sound either.  While it's true there's a flavour of '80's synth-pop running through, the band know when to hit the dizzy heights and when to pull things back and display a knack for heart-on-sleeve writing.  I'm not yet familiar with track names yet, but 'Let It Go(?)' is sheer baby making music, such is the funky soulful vibe.  Despite trepidation about filling a 45 minute headline slot, Prides masterfully and energetically make that time fly by.  One of the highlights of the weekend, and having brought the Scottish Fiction / campsite neighbourhood watch along with me, we all leave the tent ready to silent disco the night away.
