Scottish Fiction Radio Show - 18th June 2015

Oh my lordy lord, what an evening was had on Wednesday at the fourth annual SAY Awards ceremony.  Despite the humiliation in revealing my new hairdo to the world - yes I did manage to shave a chunk out the front of my hair - it was a truly spectacular evening thanks to fantastic performances from Tuff Love, Golden Teacher, and Loki and the Kartel, some on-from DJing from the TYCI crew at the after party, and the small matter of Kathryn Joseph winning the award!

Single Review - C Duncan - Here To There

Here To There is the latest offering on Fatcat Records from Glasgow songwriter C Duncan which blends his now signature scene scape of transcendental and ethereal folk music.  His classical background forms the foundation on which he layers vocal harmonies and melodies which have both a folk root, and suggest an operatic undercurrent.

There is undoubtedly a travelling theme to some of his recent creations and he himself has admitted, “The sea comes up a lot” in his compositions.  However, with the chopping, reverberating guitar and the syncopated drum rhythm, the suggestion is more towards a train journey; soothing and rhythmically meditative - “Take the train from here to there” - onward in a straight line.

C Duncan has a unique skill, his songs are born of melodies and harmonies, and he paints his narrative from a visual artist's perspective.  His songs are uniquely fresh and inhabit a slot in the Glasgow music scene which is much the richer for his presence.  This is a rather perfect song and the line “Something tells me we’ve been here before, it’s so familiar” although descriptive and relevant to the journey we are on, is, however, unreflective of the composition.  Go seek it out.

Single Review - C Duncan - For

Composer and recording artist C Duncan is the latest addition to the independent Brighton-based label FatCat Records.  A string of positive reviews and music featured on the BBC have brought the young Glaswegian to the fore in recent times.

For,  a debut single, was actually written more than two years ago.  That said, it could have been written twenty years ago, or even twenty years in the future, such is its immutable nature.  The structure is simple.  A slow-paced, clapping rhythm echoes similarities to Paul Giovanni’s Willows Song.  A hypnotic primary vocal enkindles warmth and a reverberant backing vocal accompaniment creates distance.  A weaving stringed-loop is methodical and uncomplicated.  Equally effortless is the cover of the sing le – a subtle street view rendered in colour pencil emblazoned with Charles Rennie Mackintosh-esque text. Beige is the predominant colour here and mirrors the pace and tone of the music.

There is an aural metronomy and purity to Duncan’s sound – a measuring of time that harbours all the elements of a song without overcomplicating matters.  Equally compelling is his ability to transport the audience to another setting entirely.  In the depths of mid-winter For  rewinds the listener back to a breezy summer afternoon and heralds the entrance of a bright singer songwriter who fosters an otherworldly blend of folk and choral structure to simple effect.

Scottish Fiction Podcast - 1st December 2014

Having live music on the show is one of my favourite aspects of doing Scottish Fiction, and it was an absolutely delight to finally be able to bring in electro trio Machines In Heaven for a chat and some live tracks.  In what may be our most intricate session to date, the band played tracks from their brand new EP Hindu Milk  as well as elaborating on their approach to writing and recording.
